Behavioral science paints a different picture: our minds lean on shortcuts — heuristics and biases — that usually work well enough but sometimes distort reality in systematic, predictable ways.

Once you learn these patterns, it’s hard to unsee them. Here are seven of the most intriguing, research-backed biases that quietly tug on your decisions — plus how to notice and counter them.


1. Anchoring: First Numbers Cast Long Shadows

Anchoring is our tendency to rely heavily on the first piece of information we receive when making decisions.

The arbitrary roulette study

Tversky and Kahneman ran a clever experiment: participants watched a rigged roulette wheel land on either 10 or 65, then were asked whether the percentage of African countries in the UN was higher or lower than that number — and then for their actual estimate.

Even though the roulette result was random and obviously irrelevant, people anchored on it:

  • Those who saw 10 gave much lower estimates
  • Those who saw 65 gave much higher estimates

The initial number pulled their answers toward itself.

Where you’ll see it

  • First salary offers shape entire negotiation trajectories.

4. Endowment Effect: Why Your Stuff Seems Special to You

This endowment effect appears across objects, tickets, even lottery chances. It can show up in surprising domains:

  • People overvalue stocks they own compared with similar alternatives.
  • Homeowners often list selling prices higher than market value because of emotional attachment.

In one study, participants were randomly given either a mug or a chocolate bar, then offered a chance to trade. Most people stuck with what they’d been given, even though they’d been indifferent at the start.
